RE: Norco Fridge Questions

We did that experiment in High School Physics. Hot water and cold water froze and boiled at the same rate. But there were only 90 elements or so back then, so maybe things change. My Norcold ices up in high humidity also. But most of the time we are out West with no humidity, so no problem. I usually just throw the ice on/off bar when I need ice. Otherwise I keep it off when the bin is close to filled. As for defrosting, If I leave the doors open for 3 hours the whole thing defrosts. I find that a quarterly chore.

RE: Towing a car

Yes, and No. I used a dolly for 20 plus years, permitting me to use different cars for different trips with the family. Large car, small car. But the dolly is hard on the back and knees, and it does have to be stored. Some campgrounds require it be stored off site, in a storage yard (not many but Outdoor Resorts and a few others). A dolly with surge brakes cannot be backed. A dolly without surge is dangerous on hills. And backing with a dolly is a no no as you cannot control the direction of the car. If you plan to change cars every year, or it is a leased car, a dolly is great. As you age, you will appreciate a tow bar.

Shower valve problem

I have a 2005 Adventurer manufactured 3/2004 model WFG38G. The shower valve turns off before hot water is offered. The face plate says MOEN, so I think it is a Moen control valve kit #96988. But is it, or was this a special unit for Winnebago? Since the mirror is behind the shower, and the shower is sealed with an inner wall, I sure hope the valve stem can be replaced. Have any of you replaced the shower valve? Any help would be greatly appreciated, my plumbing knowledge is minimal. Thanks. Gary

RE: New US border inspection rule

Guess that depends on the employer. Some companies forbid data to leave the work area. Motion Picture industry is very protective of their properties. So yes, you would be in violation, but that has nothing to do with the US Border Policy. It has been suggested in PC Magazine that important data be backed up to a "stick" and carried separate.

RE: Sleep Number Beds

I like it, my wife doesn't. She wins. However, we only travel 3 to 6 weeks at a time, so we are not going to change it. Negative point...leaving Los Angeles we travel over the Grapevine, so we must drop the air pressure, also in Calif and the West, we often travel over mountain passes, so every time we travel we drop the air pressure, and reset it in the evening. You must have 110 power to operate the pump. This has not been a problem, it is just one more thing to add to the checklist. Had he MH not come with a SleepByNumbers, I would have been just as happy with a good classic mattress. Just my opinion.

RE: Los Angeles To Vegas Baby

Baker grade is steep, but not nearly as trying as the Grapevine. If you take the Cajon Pass from Riverside it is a longer harder pull than Baker. Baker has a slow truck lane if need to crawl over the hill, but I have no trouble maintaining 55 with a 38ft gas MH and a toad. My previous MH with a 454 stayed above 35. In the summer the ground temp is well over 110 during the day, so if you have an older rig turn off the engine air and open the windows. If your in good shape there will be no challenge.

RE: From Bakersfield North ...

I drive both on a regular basis to visit the kids at SacState. Last trip with our 38ft MH and toad was on the 99. Previous trip was up the 5. They are very similar. I think the 5 has more big rig traffic. You will find a Flying J along with other truck stops on both. The Calif. speed limit when towing is 55, and it is enforced. You will find the truck traffic cruises at about 60mph or just a little less on both roads. Since your destination is Redding, and if you don't plan to stop in Sacramento (the Fairground is a nice place to overnight if the Fair is not in town) then the 5 would probably be a better bet for you. No interchanges just straight north to Redding. There is a group of truck stops at Grapevine at the bottom of the hill, Buttonwillow, and another group of truck stops at the 12 interchange about 30 miles south of Sacramento. Plenty of places in between. Harris Ranch is the 1/2 way point, great food but service is meant to be relaxing and if you are in a rush you'll find it slow. Also it tends to be crowded for a gas stop. Enjoy the trip, again speed limit in enforced by CHP. Happy Trail.

RE: Grand Canyon

South rim: I like to base camp it Williams, at Circle of Pines KOA. We used to stay at Grand Canyon KOA, till it was destroyed by fire. Williams KOA is a large, clean, tree filled campground 45 to 60 minutes from the Canyon rim. Far enough off the highway to be quiet at night. Large sites and friendly people. From Williams you can drive to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff (15 minutes east) and Sunset Crater. About 90 minutes to Monument Valley. There are a few campground just outside the park, but ratings have not been good. We stayed just outside the park many many years ago, and the morning helicopter noise was unbelievable. We don't do much hiking, but we kept ourselves busy for a week visiting all the places listed above. Have a great trip.

What happens to flat screens in the heat???

I fried my laptop last month in Las Vegas. Left it in the car, and the screen turned red. Cheaper to purchase a new computer than replace the screen. So what happens with the new flat screen TV's. Just went out to put something in the MH parked next to the house. 5:30pm, two fans running and the inside temp is still 94 degrees. Probably well over 100 in mid afternoon. Are the new TV's at risk????

RE: Digital Box Hook Up

We made a list of all the campgrounds we have been to over the last 5 years that did not have a cable connection. We could only think of one, it was in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, and a regular antenna would not work there anyway. Guess I won't bother with the converter box. Later I might follow FritoBandito's lead. Things don't always have to make sense to be sensible.

RE: dead bug adhesion reduction

After traveling through some rather thick "bug storms" I had the windshield coated with Diamon-fusion. Pricey, but it works. It is supposed to repel rocks, but I won't bet on that claim. It does keep the bugs from sticking.

RE: National Park Retreats - Estes Park - Reviews?

We enjoyed Elk Meadows a few times. Don't remember trees, but I do remember an evening view of the clearest of skies. It takes a few days to acclimate to the elevation. Friendly people, and planned activities most days...a meal, a craft, a movie, etc. Wherever you stay, Estes is a great place to relax or adventure.

RE: La Mesa RV

Personally I would not blame the economy. The San Bernadino service department was a nightmare. I would never go back, nor have I spoken to or read a thread from a happy customer. Perhaps it finally caught up with them.

Moen Shower adjustment?

My Winnebago Adventurer has a Moen single handle shower control. Recently the shower seems to have broken. When turned to hot, the water flow diminishes. There is plenty of volume at cold, but it is cold. I just took off the handle and there does not appear to be a cartridge, but perhaps the control setting has slipped. Has anyone else dealt with this problem? Hot water works fine at all other faucets. Thanks, Gary

RE: Does anybody from the Flying J company monitor this forum.

I have been MHing for 30 plus years. I have never had a problem with a trucker. On more than a few occasions truck drivers have offered help, supplied a bolt, and been full of friendly conversation. As for Flying J. It's a big gas station. Nothing more, nothing less. It has a easy pull through (most of them) and a place to park for lunch (most of them). The help is friendly but but often overworked. I guess they could improve their service, but that would increase the overhead. In general, no complaints here. Happy Trails you all

RE: Las Vegas Hotels with an RV

The idea as I read it is to stop, park, eat, and leave. No problem at many hotels in Las Vegas. South Point, Silverton, The Orleans, Sam's Town, Circus Circus, and all the Station Casinos have big rig parking lots, and good buffets. No hookups in the parking lots, and it gets real hot, so if you have pets you will need to keep the generator going. Most of the strip hotels can accommodate big rigs, but driving on the Las Vegas Strip is not fun, and the parking is often way off in the back. Enjoy.

RE: Service Dogs

We travel with a small companion dog. When she has her vest on we have never had a problem. We do not take her places where she might not be wanted. I find no reason to take her to a restaurant as my wife and I are together. But the vest does make State and National parks accessible, along with trams and shuttles. Example, the FMCA convention is not real pet friendly, although pets are allowed in the campgrounds, but not the exhibit areas. A marked companion dog was welcome in all venues, and made the convention accessible for us.

RE: Need reservations for California trip?

During the winter months I don't think you will need reservations anyplace in SoCal. Except maybe holidays, like spring break. Both private and public campgrounds have winter space.

Kudos to KOA Petaluma

We just spent 4 nights at KOA Petaluma with our granddaughter. Each day a small supervised crew of physically and/or functionally disabled young adults in uniform helped clean the campground, keeping he grounds spotless. It appeared that they felt personal reward by their accomplishments and they responded happily to praise by guests. I thank KOA petaluma for taking the time to help others help themselves. As a side note, it is a great campground especially with children.
